Teachers' Notes: The Seaside - Punch & Judy

Teaching Idea

What did our Grandparents do on their seaside holidays?

This is a photograph of ‘Uncle Lew’s Punch & Judy show’ taken at Great Yarmouth in 1948. Ask if any of your pupils have ever heard of Punch & Judy? Have any of them ever seen a Punch & Judy show?

You may like to show them a clip of a Punch & Judy show: http://www.icons.org.uk/theicons/collection/punch-and-judy/features/watch-a-show

Ask them to decide how they feel about Mr Punch – is he good or bad?  Is a puppet show a good way of teaching people about good and bad?  Below are some additional notes about the history of Punch and Judy that may aid you in this discussion.

You could then create your own class puppet show(s).  Set a scenario such as; ‘you have to explain to your little brother/sister that it is naughty to steal sweets’.  Decide on what characters you want and work out your story as a class.  Then ask the pupils to draw a storyboard for their puppet show.  Then if possible allow pupils to make their puppets and perform their play(s) to the class/other pupils in the school.
