A negro slave called Sambo, who is buried nearby, is said to have died here in 1736. Very little is known about Sambo's life.
Add to My Favourites English Heritage.NMR Image of a Slave ship? This piece of embroidery shows 2 scenes. One shows what could be a slave ship. The other is the inside a house or possibly a church. It is in the style of a sampler. Samplers were usually worked by girls learning to sew. They sometimes included letters of the alphabet but could also show events and scenes from a person's life. Myrtilla belonged to Thomas Beauchamp of Nevis and died in 1705. Sugar cane cut by slaves was imported and refined here. Merchants and manufacturers made huge profits.

The manufacture of tobacco became an important trade in Bristol. Tobacco was imported from the West Indies and America, where it was cut by slaves.

He was also a Mayor of Bristol.

Clarkson was a leading abolitionist who travelled the country investigating the conditions on slave ships, often at great personal risk.

Wilberforce was the leader of the parliamentary campaign to abolish the slave trade.

Thomas Fowell Buxton continued the campaign in Parliament started by Wilberforce. Fox was an influential MP who died whilst campaigning for the abolition of slavery.
